What is ETIAS and why is it important?

ETIAS will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the boarders within the Schengen Area (plus Cyprus, Iceland and Romania) by requiring travellers to obtain authorisation before their trip. This will be valid for multiple entries and a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

To obtain an ETIAS authorisation, travellers will need to fill out an online application form with their personal information, travel details, and answer a series of security-related questions. It costs €7 per application and is free for those under 18 or over 70.

Once the application is submitted, it will be processed electronically, and results will generally be provided within minutes. The ETIAS authorisation will be electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, meaning there will be no need for physical documentation or sticker labels. Travellers will simply need to present their passport to immigration authorities upon arrival, where it will be scanned to verify the ETIAS authorisation.
