International Women’s Day 8th March 2023

08/03/2023

Emmeline Pankhurst - was a British political activist who organised the UK suffragette movement and helped women win the right to vote. She was widely criticised for her tactics, and historians disagree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognised as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.

Helen Keller - After contracting an illness during childhood, she became deaf and blind at the age of one and was unable to talk. Helen and her family found ways to connect with each other, such as hand-signing. When Anne Sullivan, a teacher, came into her life, Helen discovered more ways to communicate with the wider world, learning finger-spelling and how to talk. This saw her become the first deaf-blind person to earn a university degree and led her to tour the world advocating for the rights of disabled people.

Gloria Steinem - realised from a young age that the general attitude towards women was different to the way people behaved towards men. After spending some time abroad, she became passionate about grassroot activism. This manifested into her work with the women’s liberation movement and even the articles she wrote as a journalist. Gloria dedicated her life to women’s rights and became one of the most iconic feminists in the world.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg - was an American lawyer and jurist, who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and was the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court. She spent much of her legal career advocating for gender equality and women’s rights.

Mae Jemison - Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992.

Let’s celebrate these iconic women, and all women everywhere!
